World Diabetes Day 2006
Established by the World Health Organisation and the International Diabetes Federation in 1991, World Diabetes Day (WDD) has since been celebrated every year worldwide on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin. In Singapore this year, DSS commemorated WDD on Sunday, 5 November, amid greater media attention.
World Diabetes Day (WDD) was officially opened by our Guest of Honour, Mr Heng Chee How, Minister of State (Health), at Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The focus this year was on Diabetes Care for Everyone - Be In Charge, highlighting the presence and existence of groups and communities in both developed and developing countries who have difficulties accessing optimal diabetes care. This theme is pertinent, in the light of the recent Chronic Disease Management initiative by the Ministry of Health.
WDD 2006 saw an increase number of talks organised by supporting drug and diagnostic companies in diabetes care. DSS members and the public enjoyed the privilege of choosing a health screening package and sampling new inventions and products at the exhibition. They also learned important lessons on the prevention and management of diabetes the fun way through quizzes and games and winning prizes, and taking part in lucky draws on stage.
