Solo Cycling for a Good Cause

Cycling recently took on a beautiful meaning for DSS when it became one  remarkable woman's two -day effort to raise funds for the Society.

Flagged off on 26 Febuary, 7.30 pm at CDANS Country Club by Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Minister of state for Foreign   Affairs,   Mayor   for   North  East CDC and MP for Aljunied GRC,Wendy Chan embarked on a 35-hour trek to cycle solo from Singapore to Malacca and  back.

On her return to CDANS at 4 pm, she was welcomed by Guest-of-Honour Dr Amy Khor, Mayor for South West CDC and MP for Hong Kah GRC, Mayor Zainul as well as Dr Warren Lee, MP for Sembawang GRC and chairman of DSS.

Speaking to DMLife, Wendy said the journey covering approximately 500 kilometres was a tough but good one, thanks to those who supported her.

"I coughed throughout my cycling on the first day as the air quality was very bad. When we set out on the return trip from Malacca at about 4.30 am on the second day, it rained on and off for five hours. In any case, we still reached the Causeway at 2 pm, an hour earlier than we anticipated," she said.

An ardent supporter of charity causes, Wendy had cycled solo from Singapore to Bangkok and back within two weeks to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation in 2002. In 2003, she pedalled on a stationary bike for 24 hours to raise funds for the Children's Cancer". I always like to try something new for a different fund-raising project, so  that  this becomes  a real   challenge to  me  and hopefully an initiative that

would encourage people to donate to the good cause I  support," she said.

According to Dr Lee, when it comes to cycling, there is more to just fund-raising for patients with diabetes.

"The take-home message is that we can have a fuller,  healthier life, as long as we keep diabetes at bay by taking up healthy sports like cycling," he said.
