Get Physical with Gardening

According to health experts, exercise is important in preventing and managing Type 2 diabetes in Singapore.

This is because exercise helps to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce obesity and improve lipid profile, improve cardiovascular function, as well as physical fitness.

Leisure-time gardening can also be a form of exercise in its own way. Light to moderate activities like watering, pruning and maintaining your own garden on the whole can help to improve health and wellness in the long term.

Ready, Set, Go!

One of the greatest satisfactions, regardless of age, fitness or training, is to be able to put together key elements of an idea in mind to shape your own garden. There are several factors to consider before you begin designing your garden.

Site-seeing

Look carefully at your site and take into account what surrounds your garden. You need to inspect which way your garden faces the sun, shade and wind everyday as this has a great influence on what will flourish.

Rain or Shine

Consider how much rain the site will get. In the tropics, however, the amount of water received will not be a limiting factor. Temperatures in the coastal regions may be cooler during the raining season. Small areas of the garden may have their own microclimates (e.g. the portion close to base of walls may be more shady and cooler).

Soil Good

Finally, you should examine the soil condition. Generally soil is made up of the bedrock beneath it, humus (organic matter), water and air. Some plants do better in certain conditions, so it may be worth testing the soil pH level.

Visually, you can determine your soil characteristics by looking at its consistency. Soil largely made of peat, sand or clay is acidic, while chalk limestone is alkaline, although it is possible to modify the pH level, but not advisable to alter your soil too much. It is best to grow plants in pots with specialist soil if the soil in your garden is deemed unsuitable.

Your knowledge of the soil condition will also help you determine the water retention level, nutrients level and hence cater to the type of plants you would love to grow.

Colour & Design

It is important to choose the design that is right for you, your family and lifestyle in general. There is no harm in creating your garden design bit by bit, phase by phase. The garden should adopt a unified structure. Walking paths, arches, curved beds and even steps are good links to start off with.

Play around with colour to achieve a balanced sensation without having to make major structural changes. Hot striking colours, reds and oranges, will make the garden look outstanding and seem lively tropically. Conversely, soft shades will make it appear soothing and relaxed.

If you have difficulty in choosing a garden design, feel free to adopt your own desired theme and consult the professionals.
