To Taiwanese
artist, Yang Tze Yun, the art of calligraphy or beautiful "writing"
should reveal the thoughts. personality and taste of the artist.
Yang, a strong advocate of a distinctive and modern offshoot of this
traditional art form, studied calligraphy at the graduate school of the
Cultural University in Taiwan.
Whilst painting and exhibiting for several years in the Netherlands.
Yang demonstrated his artistic versatility by mastering philosophy,
music and art history. He currently complements his painting exhibitions
by performing as a classical singer.
Yang did not seek to challenge the traditions of calligraphy when he
started out as an artist. However, after 20 years of following this
established artform, he decided to 'break away' and experiment with his
own ideas.
As a result, Yang has developed paintings that are minimalist, zen-like,
sometimes consisting of only one brushstroke. Nevertheless, the images
are strong, concise, lyrical and captivate the viewer. Though his style
is calligraphic in origin, it bears no resemblance to known Chinese
characters or calligraphy.
These images emanate from a mind that has undergone a meditative process
and taps into his subconscious. The painting is entirely abstract and
modern.
Yang currently follows a heavy exhibition schedule in Taiwan. China.
Europe and Australia. When not teaching, he works and teaches in his
studio located by the beaches of San Dzi Hsiang, Taipei County. Here he
is able to seek the peace and solitude which are vital in producing
artworks that reflect life, nature and creation.
